This is a compound-complex sentence because it contains three independent clauses and two dependent clauses. The first independent clause is "True, she was pretty" and the bubject here is "she" and "was" is the verb. The second independent clause is "he did not really know her" and it's subject is "he" and the verb is "did not." The last independent cluase is "but he thought how she might laugh" in where the subject is "he" and the verb is "thought." On the other hand, the first dependent clause is "and that was nice"; the subject is "that" and the verb is "was." The second and final dependent clause is " when he met her and told her how his thoughts were running"; the subject is "he" and the verb "met" and "told." In this last sentence there is a dependent clause inside on the clause which is "how his thoughts were running." All these clauses are joined by two coordinating conjunctions and three subordinating conjunctions, wich are "nad", "but", "but", "how", when", and "how."
